People with intellectual disability and those on the autism spectrum face unfair health disparities in Australia. Health care workers and staff are not given the right tools or education to support this population effectively. So, we developed education to increase knowledge, confidence and improve attitudes around providing care to patients with intellectual disability or those on the autism spectrum
This education course was developed as part of the Enhancing Access to Services for Your Health – the “EASY Health” initiative, and the Bridge to Better Health research project. The lessons aim to give you the knowledge and understanding to improve the way healthcare services are delivered to people with intellectual disability, and those on the autism spectrum.
This e-learning was funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and the National Health and Medical Research Council. The content was co-designed with people with intellectual disability, people on the autism spectrum and health professionals. We would also like to acknowledge the valuable expertise and contribution of Indelability Arts, Mater Research and Mater Education.
We acknowledge the individual and collective expertise of people with intellectual disability and those on the autism spectrum. We recognise their vital contribution at all levels and value the courage of those who shared their unique perspective for the purpose of learning and growing together to achieve better outcomes for all. We acknowledge the people and the Elders of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nations who are the Traditional Owners of the land and seas of Australia.
